The basic Sumi-e brush, called a tsuiate or mokkotsu has a long bamboo handle and bristles (from badger, sheep, horse, or deer) about one and one half to two inches long, that are sharpened to a point. This is a remarkably sensitive and flexible painting tool that allows for fine graduations of shading in a single brush stroke.
