In Japan, haiku is by far the most popular literary art. By recent estimates,
there are as many as six million Japanese people actively composing haiku.
Westerners who visit Japan are often surprised to find that nearly all major
newspapers carry a haiku column at least once a week, sometimes even on the
front page. With its recent proliferation over the Internet, haiku is rapidly
gaining popularity in other languages around the world.
